Should you start a blog in 2020? If this is the question you have been pondering then I have some answers for you.
The answers are based on my over 15 years experience in the blogging sphere.
I started blogging by chance when I came across Google blogger and felt I could use that platform to share my thoughts. I initially started blogging about culture and then transitioned to religion and other topics such as natural remedies.
These were all topics that were dear to my heart and I had a lot to share. As more and more people came to my blog I felt emboldened to share even more information.
There is nothing that surpasses the feeling that you are being heard.

Table of Contents
1. It can Earn Enough Income Over Time To Replace Your Salary
When I started blogging I had no idea that you could make money from blogging. I did it just to share my ideas.
It was only later on that I discovered that one could make money through ads and other methods.
While I have not made millions of dollars like other bloggers, I have made enough to convince me that that is possible.
I, therefore, know that if you consistently push out quality content over time you will be able to earn a full-time income.
It is definitely not a thing that can happen in a short period of time. According to those that have studied these including the Income School, it should take at least 2 years of blogging.
One can however achieve this faster if he is doing it full time from the beginning. Otherwise, if you are blogging as a part-time thing then 2 years is the best estimate.
How Do You Make Money Blogging?
There various ways one can make money while blogging. One of the most common ways of doing this is through pay per click advertisements on your site.
The major player in pay per click advertisement is Google Adsense. It is by far the biggest as it controls about 60 % of all pay per click advertisements.
Others include Mediavine, AdThrive, Ezoic who are also Google Certified Publishing partners. These three get most of their adverts from Google Adsense.
AdThrive and AdThrive alternatives are however preferred by most high traffic blogs because they offer better-paying ads on the blogs that they put ads.
There are other players besides these such as Medianet, infolinks that are not reliant on Google AdSense.
Another way you can make money through blogging is through affiliate marketing. This is when you promote other people’s products for a commission.
This is in my opinion one of the most lucrative ways of earning an income that is far better than pay per click advertising.
One can get commissions as high as 70% of the price for digital products. That is why most bloggers prefer to use only affiliate marketing on their blogs.
Actually, you don’t have to have massive traffic to make a killing with affiliate marketing.
For example, if you are promoting a product that sells at $20 per sale with a commission of 50% You only need a hundred product sales to make a thousand dollars.
Yet from my experience you will need traffic in the region of 100,000 to make a $1000 dollars. Actually, in some niches you will struggle to make that sort of income or even come close.
Finally, the other method for making money will be through your own info product.
The good thing about creating an info product is that you can control the price and everything about the product.
This is not the case if you are promoting other people’s products. They can decide to remove it from the market and you will be one of the casualties.
2. It Can Give You Freedom to Move Around The World While Still Making Money
One of the benefits of an internet entrepreneur is that You have the freedom to do whatever you want at any time. This is especially true for those that manage to make this a full-time business and full-time income.
When that happens you are your own boss. You decide everything about your blogging business.
As long as you have internet you can decide to go to holiday destinations for as long as you want while still making money.
Actually I have blog properties that I rarely touch that have been making money for years.
That is what being successsful blogger will do to your life.
I know of bloggers who are always on the road going to various holiday destinations around the world. That is my goal this year and I hope you too will have the same ambition.
3. More Time With Your Family If You Are Successful
Once you start earning a full-time income is that it will free your time so that you can have more time with your family.
Since you don’t have to move from home to work every day you will be able to have more time with your family and kids.
Once you become established you don’t need to work every day as your blog is still available 24/7.
You can, therefore, choose to work x number of days every week and still make money from your old posts.
Most of the tensions that we experience in our families are the result of the lack of time we have with our kids and spouses.
Most children complain that their parents are there for them to help them with homework and other things.
All that changes the moment you become a full-time blogger. As you will be your own boss and are available at any time.
4. You are Your Own Boss
The cool thing about blogging is that you are your own boss especially if you decide to do it full time. You will decide everything from how long you will work to the salary, you get, etc.
There is nothing as liberating as being your own boss. Gone will the days that you had to wade through the snow to go to your office.
You will never be answerable to anyone about your work except yourself.
5. You Will Create Your Own Platform To Share Your Opinions
The ability to share your opinions with thousands of people is what amazed me most in my early days.
I remember looking at the number of subscribers I had accumulated and getting excited at the fact that I could share my opinions with them.
That is the power of blogging. You are in control of your own sphere and can share whatever you believe as long as it is not offensive.
Up to this day, I still get excited when I receive messages from my readers discussing what I had written. You feel like you have all the power in the world.
Besides this is the fact that you are making a difference in the lives of others. It is always exciting to find that some people have learned a thing or two through my blogs.
I have had people who have differing opinions from and tell me so. Even in those cases I still feel humbled to have had that stage where I can debate issues with people.
Life is not about agreeing with everybody else. As long you disagree in a respectful manner there should be no problem whatsoever.
6. It Is One of The Cheapest Ways of Starting a Business
If you take everything into account blogging is one of the cheapest ways to start a business. Just imagine starting a business with just $4 and over time be able to make a living out of it.
Of course, as traffic increases you may have to find better packages but you will still be paying less than what you would need to start any other business.
If for whatever reason you don’t have the $4 you can find a free blogging platform like blogger.
Actually I started blogging using Google Blogger 15 years ago. I still have some blogs on Blogger.
I have written a post comparing Blogger vs WordPress.
7. You can Help To Change The World
By blogging you can be an agent for change in the things that you care for very much. One of the pleasant surprises that I got when I started blogging was the number of people I could be able to influence through my blogs.
It dawned on me that my timid voice was now reaching thousands every day for good or for worse.
Blogging is therefore a good platform for trying to change the opinions and behavior of people. You can easily advocate for subjects like climate change, recycling etc while sitting in your own house.
You don’t need to gather thousands in a stadium as you can reach that number of people just by blogging.
The internet has made ordinary citizens become worldwide influencers while seated in the comfort of their homes.
It Can Help Grow Your Business
If you have a business and yet have no blog then you are missing out big time. It is not enough to just have a website, you need to have a blog where you can communicate with your customers and potential customers.
On the blog you can share news about your products, answer customer questions, ideas, etc. Through the blog you can also get to know what your customers think of your products.
And the more content you produce the higher the chances that your traffic will continue to grow. And the more traffic you have the greater the chances of gettting even more customers for your prducts or service.
Most businesses are not going online to promote their products and services rather than advertising on billboards or television. Those companies are definitely seeing something that you are missing, so consider opening a blog for your company.
If you do this, it may help grow your business if you do it right.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is it worth to start a blog in 2020?
Despite claims to the contrary, it is still worth it to start a blog in 2020. You just need to put in the hours and produce quality stuff.
If you focus on your readers and provide the best answers and solutions they can ever find on the net then even the search engines will recognize your efforts. Even if you just want to share your ideas and not to make money, it is still the best medium for sharing your ideas and information.
There have been predictions in the past that blogging was on the way out but those are yet to materialize. And I believe that it would still continue like that just like ebooks haven’t replaced paper books completely. There will still be room for bloggers in the future.
In the years that I have been blogging I have found out that even when it comes to selling stuff, stories are still the best way of convincing people to buy something. Those stories can be in the form of blog posts.
I have seen that a simple commentary about a book can dramatically increase your sales than the best ads out there. People want to hear from someone who has used a product or who can take time to explain how a thing works, etc.
Is blogging dead in 2020?
The truth is bloggging is not dead in 2020 and I don’t see it dying soon if ever. These predictions have been there since I started blogging over 15 years ago and they have not come to fruition.
There may be changes in how people blog in terms of the formats used and how the information is presented but blogging will still be with us. If you therefore want to start blogging, then do so as it is not dead yet and is still going strong.
Why do blogs fail?
Unfortunately, blogs can sometimes fail. There are so many reasons why blogs can fail. One of the causes of failure could be the cost of hosting your site if you self host.
Though the cost of hosting sites is reasonable to most people, in some parts of the world the same amount could be out of reach for some people.
There are however options you can pursue if you are struggling financially. There are so many free blogging services out there such as Google Blogger, WordPress.com, etc.
Another major reason why blogs fail is when bloggers fail to write quality content that satisfies their audience. If that happens you will end up losing your visitors and even the search engines will pick up on that and not rank your blog well.
It is therefore advisable that as a blogger you provide your audience with content that they cannot easily find anywhere else.
What kind of blogs make the most money?
While I understand the reasoning behind this question on the kind of blogs that make the most money, I think this is a bad motivation for success.
To be a good blogger your focus should not be on money but on meeting the needs of your audience.
Eventually, money follows once your blog gains traction but it should not be the goal. Having said that the following types of blogs are the ones that make the most money according to the experts.
- Personal Finance
- Beauty and Fashion
- Home Decor
- DIY and Crafting
In conclusion, my answer to the question should you start a blog in 2020 is definitely yes. I started blogging 15 years ago and I know from experience that it works.
Whether you own a business or want to share your opinions about things happening in the world, or causes, there is no better medium to share them than through a blog. This is an internet world and no serious business or organization or cause can afford not getting involved in some way.
Look at companies at what the internet has done for companies such as Amazon, Uber, Alibaba, etc. All these have one thing in common – they are where they are today because of the internet. You too can get your own slice of this by opening a blog.
A blog that shares your products, services, opinions, causes, religion, or whatever you want to share. All you need is to decide what you want to share and then you need to take action.
